King of the Road

February 16th, 2009

I apologize for not having an update in the past week, but I have been traveling up the East Coast on my third of four major trips during my retirement.  Last week I drove up to University of Virginia to see my friend Vikas before driving up to NOVA (Northern Virginia, for those of you who aren’t down with the lingo) to do some expedited apartment shopping with my Dad before I head off to University of North Carolina at the end of the week.  Since I don’t have much to say, nor do I have any of my breathtaking photography handy, I will keep this post short and use bullet points…

  • Starting Now
  • The drive up to UVA from Atlanta sucked.  I took I-85 up through North Carolina, as is my normal drive, but then I got on to Highway 29 for the trip though Virginia.  I’ve never been on 29 before, outside of Lee Hwy in NOVA, which I learned after the fact is the same road.  That shouldn’t have surprised me.  Highway 29 is apparently the road that takes you through every single hillbilly town in Virginia, while making your drive basically as slow as reasonably possible, given the fact that it is a highway.  No kidding, I drove that road for 150 miles, going through such towns as Martinsville, Dansville, Reidsville, Scottsville (and no, this is not a joke, these are the towns I drove through) and Lynchburg, home of Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University.  Every city had a 35 mph speed limit and a number of stoplights.  That drive sucked and I will not be doing it again.
  • UVA has a very nice campus, possibly the nicest college campus I have ever visited.  I hadn’t been to the school since I was in 5th grade and went to Pete Gillan Basketball Camp, so my memories of the place were few.  Despite getting to meet either Tiki or Ronde Barber at the camp (I don’t remember which one, it was when they were in college), I had more fun this visit.
  • Apartment shopping in DC sucks.  Everything is really expensive and old.  The only place that we found that was what we were looking for just so happened to be in the ghetto.  I shall hopefully have more luck tomorrow.  I’m sure there will be more to this story later.
  • Finally, the Daytona 500 was a disappointment.  Any sporting event cut short by rain is going to be a disappointment for sure, but you’ll never see the Super Bowl or Stanley Cup cut short due to weather (notice how I didn’t mention the World Series).  The giant crash caused by Dale Jr. was exciting, though the wreck eliminated my three fantasy drivers from the race 🙁
  • Bullet Points Ending

Boogity Boogity Boogity

February 8th, 2009

Anyone who watches Nascar knows what those three words mean.  Uttered at the start of every race (well, every race that is broadcast on FOX) by former Winston Cup Champion Darrell Waltrip, “Boogity Boogity Boogity…Let’s Go Racing Boys” gets the blood pumping of any good ol’ southern boy, like myself, who is in love with racing.  Yes I, a Jew from Northern Virginia, am a Nascar fan.  Hell, I would take it even further.  I am obsessed with Nascar.  Being that last night was the start of Daytona Week, I thought now would be as good of a time as ever to discuss my love for the sport of Stock Car Racing.

I (don’t) Love New York

February 5th, 2009

Do not get me wrong – I love going to New York to visit my friends and family, and I visit a few times every year, but man, I cannot stand that city.  Please let me explain.

My New T-Shirt

My New T-Shirt

I was in New York City the past four days visiting friends from college after spending the night on Long Island Saturday with my Grandma.  I was sleeping on the sleep sofa of my friend’s, Dave and Dave (easily distinguishable for this post as DK and Ddubs), sofa.  Their apartment, which is actually surprisingly nice for a (relatively) cheap New York apartment, is on the sixth floor of a building that is next door to the Four Seasons Hotel in Midtown.  With a location like that, you would think that the normal New York “quirks” (you know, towers of trash bags on the sidewalks at night, trucks and buses honking at all hours of the night, etc.) wouldn’t be as prevalent.  I was wrong.

Summer Vacay

January 30th, 2009

I’m heading up to New York for a few days so I won’t be updating the blog until I return, but I’m sure there will some great stories when I do!

Prediction: Cardinals 30, Steelers 28

The Shameless Carnivore

January 27th, 2009

I love eating meat.  Actually, I love eating, period, but meat is at the top of things that I love to eat.  Give me the 24 oz. Bone-In Ribeye at The Palm any day of the week (seriously, give it to me as I am too unemployed right now to afford one myself) and I am a happy man.  Throw a serious helping of horseradish on that steak and I’m even happier.

Up until a few weeks ago I would have considered myself a Shameless Carnivore but since then, I have read the work of a man who has quickly become one of my heroes.  His book, The Shameless Carnivore: A Manifesto for Meat Lovers, has changed my way of thinking about eating meat.

Fun Facts!

January 23rd, 2009

I’ve been pretty curious to know how many people actually read the blog, so this afternoon I decided to check out some of the trackers that WordPress provides.  Amoung the findings:

  • Since January 1, 178 different people have visited the site a total of 626 times
  • Most people read the site between the hours of 12pm and 2pm.  I guess this shows that everyone is using their lunch break constructively
  • People in six countries have viewed the site (US, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Switzerland and Italy)
  • 13 people have visited this site from Google (the best is someone Googled “Unisex Bathroom Stories” and found this site that way)
  • 62% of visitors use a Mac.  Very interesting
  • 56 visits have lasted over an hour.  That is dedication!

I would really like to get the number of visitors higher.  If we can get 250 unique visitors by the end of February I will post a surpise for everyone that I know they will love.  And, yes, it will include nudity.  So spread the word, tell your friends, paint the town, whatever you want!

The challenge begins…….NOW

We (Don’t) Want Your Blood

January 21st, 2009

I used to donate blood all the time in college. Every six weeks, or whatever the length of time they would make you wait between givings, if I remembered, I would donate. In fact, one time, I even donated Platelets, which, if you’ve never done so before, is a one hour procedure that, I can only assume, feels like doing heroin (there were a lot of commas in that sentence, sorry). After I graduated, for whatever reason, I stopped donating. I decided, in honor of Barack Obama, I would go and donate this afternoon.
